Gifted Services in Hilliard

Hilliard City Schools

Hilliard City Schools has been working toward improving gifted identification and gifted services based on the 2016 recommendations of the Gifted Task Force. This year, we are implementing a variety of whole-grade assessments to equitably identify gifted students across our district demographic groups. For more information about how Hilliard City Schools identifies gifted students, please visit the Gifted Services page of our district website.

We have also implemented gifted cluster grouping as our elementary service model. Licensed Gifted Intervention Specialists partner with highly trained classroom teachers to meet gifted students’ academic and social-emotional needs every day in the regular classroom. This has enabled the Hilliard City Schools to provide targeted gifted services to considerably more elementary students than we have served in the past.

Students in our elementary gifted cluster classrooms have participated in a variety of engaging and challenging lessons so far this year, such as STEM challenges, Breakout games, collaborative Three-Act Math tasks, and more thinking skills activities. Teachers also regularly use high quality children’s literature to discuss social-emotional concerns in the classroom, including growth mindset, perseverance, and empathy.

In addition to the elementary classroom teachers who are providing gifted services, our gifted services staff offers ongoing professional learning on gifted education topics to all high school Advanced Placement (AP) teachers. Gifted freshmen at all three high schools have been invited to participate in small cohort groups with their school counselors to discuss common concerns and to make connections with other gifted students. These initiatives have led to a huge increase in the number of staff members who are informed of best-practices in gifted education.

As we continue to collect and analyze gifted identification data, Hilliard City Schools is committed to adjusting and adapting our gifted service offerings to best meet the needs of our gifted students. There are a variety of innovative ideas for gifted services that our curriculum teams continue to explore for implementation in future years. By being responsive to current student data, Hilliard City Schools will be able to personalize learning opportunities and ensure that all of our gifted students are Ready for Tomorrow.

Ready for Tomorrow – Interests

Our Mission Statement says we “will ensure that every student is Ready for Tomorrow.” All too often mission statements are just words on a plaque or papers in a file. In Hilliard, we live our mission statement every day. Our commitment to active partnerships takes effort… the effort is what makes Hilliard a great place for students and families.

This is our third of four videos that help to explain what Ready for Tomorrow means through the eyes of our teachers, students, alumni and parents.  Here you can watch the first video, from Superintendent John Marschhausen, to understand his vision of Ready for Tomorrow.  You can watch the second video, which discusses our academics, here.

Partnership Cultivated with Parents of Dyslexic Students

Hilliard City Schools

In the Hilliard City School District we are true to our values. We’ve spent
considerable time and effort identifying the core values, the expected behaviors, and the desired outcomes that make this a special place for students to learn, grow, and develop. For us, our mission and culture aren’t posters on our walls; our culture is in our DNA. The fabric of our district is woven by the way we do business – by the way we live our lives. This starts with the district leadership. We model our values. We Stand Up and Own It, embrace the Power of the Team, and live with a Passion for Growth.

To this end, when a group of parents approached us with concerns about the reading services of a specific group of students, we live our values. We Stand Up and Own the fact that we can, and we must, do better. We engage the Power of the Team to bring together the right people, to collaborate with our parents, and to enlist experts to partner with us in the process. We embrace our Passion for Growth, our journey to Elite, to create the system that best utilizes available resources to ensure that every student is truly Ready for Tomorrow.

Over the past several weeks our team has outlined the resources we are currently using to serve students as they learn to read. This isn’t simply a communications strategy for parents with a dyslexic student; this is about reading for all students. Parent resources and information can be found in our latest Ready for Tomorrow blog.

The Hilliard City School District has formed a Dyslexia Advisory Committee. This group, under the leadership of Mrs. Vicky Clark, Director of Elementary Curriculum, will engage with parents and parent organizations interested in Hilliard’s reading programs. Board of Education President, Mr. Andy Teater, has appointed Board Vice President, Ms. Lisa Whiting, as the Board Representative to this committee. Ms. Whiting will serve as the Board liaison and provide updates to the full Board of Education during the Committee Reports portion of Board Business Meetings.

Hilliard has been well served by proactively collaborating with parents and key constituents. The Power of Team extends beyond the district walls; it includes families and the community. Our Dyslexia Advisory Committee will collaboratively identify specific areas of focus, key short and long-term goals, and desired outcomes from our work together. As with every process, we must be open together, breakdown any barriers, and build trust. This process works when we as a team, work toward a common goal. If anyone starts with an “us versus them” mentality, failure is likely.

Our mission is to ensure that every student is Ready for Tomorrow. Reading is the foundation for academic success. The Hilliard City School District is committed to excellence and passionate about our service to a diverse educational community. We are eager to live our passion for growth and continue to improve opportunities for students each and every day.
